A Thulla (Bhabhi) round, trick by trick

By Abdul Rauf · Updated

The rules of Thulla are short, but they click fastest when you watch a round happen. Below is a simplified four-player round with Thulla Champions rules. We only show the cards that matter, not every hand in full.

The table. Four players: You, Ali, Sana and Omar, playing in that order. The whole deck has been dealt, 13 cards each, and you are holding the Ace of Spades.

Trick 1: the Ace of Spades opens

Whoever holds the Ace of Spades must lead it, so you play it. Spades are now the led suit.

Everyone has played, so the highest spade wins: your Ace. The four cards leave the game and you lead the next trick. Nobody can pick anything up on the first trick.

Trick 2: a thulla, and the leader picks up

You lead a small heart, hoping to get rid of it quietly.

The highest heart on the table is your 9♥, which beats Ali's 3♥. So you pick up all three cards (your 9♥, Ali's 3♥ and Sana's K♦) and your hand grows. Sana, who threw the thulla, takes nothing and shed a dangerous king for free. You lead the next trick.

What to learn. Leading a card does not make it safe: if you lead a high card of a suit someone has run out of, the thulla comes back to you. See the strategy tips for how to read which suits are dry.

A later trick: the risk of going out

The round runs on. Omar is down to his very last card and it is his turn to lead.

Omar's Q♣ was the highest club, so Omar picks up the pile (Q♣, 5♣ and 8♦) and is back in the game with three cards. Playing your last card is only safe once the trick is over, and here it was not. Had Sana been able to follow suit with a lower club and the trick finished cleanly, Omar's Queen would have won, the cards would be cleared and Omar would be safely out.

How the round ends

Players leave the round one by one as they play their last card safely: first out, second out, third out. When only one player still holds cards, the round ends and that player is the Bhabhi (the Thulla).

If only two players are left, either may give up: the one who gives up takes the loss and the other goes out safe. Once you know the flow, try a private table with friends.

Frequently asked questions

Can the player who leads pick up the pile?

Yes. If a thulla is thrown and the leader's own card is still the highest card of the led suit, the leader picks up every card on the table, including their own.

Does the trick continue after a thulla?

No. The trick ends at once. Players who had not yet played in that trick do not play, and the player who picks up leads the next trick.

Can I be safe after playing my last card?

Only when the trick is over. If your last card was the highest of the led suit and someone then throws a thulla, you pick up the pile and you are back in the game.
