Thulla (Bhabhi) strategy: 9 tips to avoid being the Bhabhi
In Thulla (Bhabhi) there is no scoring: the only goal is not to be the last player holding cards. Luck decides the deal, but good habits decide most games. These nine tips are the ones that matter most. New to the game? Start with a worked example round, and read the common mistakes too.
1. Remember what has been played
There are 13 cards in each suit. Keep a running count of how many of each suit have been played or picked up. The fewer cards of a suit are still hidden, the more likely it is that someone has run out of it.
2. Watch who throws a thulla, and on which suit
A thulla is the only time a player admits they have no cards of a suit. Note it: that player is now out of that suit and can throw an off-suit card whenever it is led. This is your best information in the game.
3. Spend high cards early
A high card wins tricks, and the player with the highest card of the led suit picks up the pile when someone throws a thulla. Early in a round almost everyone still holds every suit, so thullas are rare and high cards are cheapest to play. Late in the round they become a liability.
4. Be careful leading a suit that is nearly gone
If few cards of a suit are still hidden, the chance that an opponent is void rises. Leading a high card of that suit invites a thulla that you then have to pick up. Lead suits that many cards are still hiding in, or lead a low card.
5. Use a thulla to throw your worst card
When you cannot follow suit, the player who throws the thulla never picks up. That makes it the best moment to dump the card most likely to hurt you later, usually your highest.
6. Keep a few low cards for the end
Low cards rarely win a trick, so they rarely make you pick up anything. Holding some in several suits lets you follow suit safely and hand the lead to someone else in the endgame.
7. Do not rush your last card
Playing your last card is only safe once the trick is over. If it was the highest card of the led suit and a thulla follows, you pick the pile up and you are back in the game. Check who could still throw a thulla before you go out with a high card.
8. Use the Hand Call with a plan
In Thulla Champions the player about to lead can ask the next player for their whole hand. It adds many cards to your hand, so it is for the moment when you would otherwise be exposed trick after trick. Remember that a computer player never refuses.
9. Practise, then raise the difficulty
Start in Practice against the Easy bot, move to Medium, and then try Hard, which tracks the cards and the voids too. After a game, think about which suit you ran out of first and why.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best strategy in Thulla?
Count the cards of each suit that have been played, remember who threw a thulla on which suit, get rid of high cards while thullas are unlikely, and keep a few low cards for the endgame.
Is it good to keep high cards in Thulla?
Usually not. A high card often wins a trick, and if someone then throws a thulla you pick up every card on the table. Spend high cards early, when most players still hold the suit.
What should I throw when I cannot follow suit?
Your most dangerous card, usually your highest. The player who throws the thulla never picks up the pile, so it is a free chance to get rid of a card that could hurt you later.
How do I get better at Bhabhi?
Practise against the computer, starting with the Easy bot and moving up to Hard, and review which suits you ran out of first.
