7 common Thulla (Bhabhi) mistakes

By Abdul Rauf · Updated

Most games of Thulla are lost by the same few errors, not by bad luck. Here are seven to watch for, each with a quick fix. For the bigger picture see the strategy tips.

1. Hoarding high cards

A King or an Ace feels strong, but in Thulla the highest card of the led suit is the one that picks up the pile when a thulla lands. Fix: play your high cards early, while most players can still follow suit.

2. Leading a suit that is nearly gone

When only a few cards of a suit are left, someone is probably out of it. A high lead then invites a thulla and you take the pile. Fix: count the suit before you lead it; if few cards remain hidden, lead low or lead something else.

3. Ignoring who threw a thulla

A thulla tells you that player has no cards of that suit. Forgetting it means leading right into them later. Fix: say it to yourself: "Sana is out of hearts."

4. Throwing a low card when you could dump a high one

When you cannot follow suit you may throw any card, and the thrower never picks up. Throwing a small card wastes the one free chance to drop a card that could hurt you later. Fix: throw your most dangerous card, usually your highest.

5. Rushing out with a high last card

Playing your last card is only safe once the trick is over. If it is the highest of the led suit and a later player throws a thulla, you pick up the pile and are back in. Fix: before you go out, check whether anyone behind you could still be void.

6. Using the Hand Call without a plan

The Hand Call hands you the next player's entire hand if they accept. That is a lot of extra cards. Fix: use it only when you would otherwise be exposed trick after trick, and remember that computer players always accept.

7. Not keeping a few low cards for the endgame

With only high cards left you win tricks you do not want to win. Fix: keep a couple of low cards in different suits so you can follow suit safely and pass the lead on.

The best way to fix a habit is to practise it: open Practice against the Easy bot and work up to Hard. A worked example round shows several of these situations in action.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I keep picking up the pile in Thulla?

Usually because you played or led the highest card of a suit that someone had already run out of. Track which suits each player has thrown a thulla on.

Is the Ace a good card to keep?

Not for long. An Ace is the highest card of its suit, so it takes the pile whenever a thulla is thrown on that suit. Play it while most players can still follow suit.
